A ceremony will be held at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill to thank the family of a retired Centre College professor for a generous gift in his memory.
The dedication of a plaque in memory of Dr. Frederick Loetscher, professor emeritus of biology, will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at the Shaker Village amphitheater.
The $60,000 donation will allow the establishment of the Nature Preserve at Shaker Village. This includes the development of a wetland area, as well as an arboretum, along with new trail kiosks, signage and brochures, interpretive materials, and the addition of new trails. Future gifts are needed to fund the expansion of the Nature Preserve.
“We are profoundly grateful for the Loetscher family’s generosity,” said Don Pelly, Shaker Village Property Manager. “This gift helps us to further our mission to preserve this property and to be able to share it with our guests for years to come.”
Fellow birder and friend of Dr. Loetscher, Bill Kemper, adds, “I think he would appreciate that people could make use of his contribution – that it could be an opportunity for people to be exposed to nature.”
A wildlife observation deck and a bird observation blind have already been built on the property.
Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is a non-profit organization and a National Historic Landmark.
