Harrodsburg, Kentucky - Visitors to Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill can get a taste of homemade sweet sorghum syrup this weekend. The squeezing process begins on October 30, 2008 as "Blue," a one-ton Percheron mare, powers the sorghum mill and the green sorghum juice is collected in buckets.
Kids will have an opportunity to get a piece of cane to chew on. The sweetness of the raw cane has been enjoyed by children and adults since the introduction of sorghum cane into the U.S. in the 1830s.
Cooking will take place all day on November 1, 2008. Guests can see the sorghum juice being evaporated and cooked down into syrup and can even taste it as it cooks. The batch pan holds about 40 gallons of juice that will be turned into about four gallons of sweet sorghum syrup. The finished product will be available in the Craft Store for purchase during the first week of November.
