Harrodsburg, Kentucky – Explore nearly 3,000 acres and enjoy a day of free outdoor adventure as Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill celebrates National Trails Day. The event is scheduled for June 7, 2008 at the National Historic Landmark in Harrodsburg.
There will be activities for the whole family, such as guided horseback rides, guided mill site hikes and guided mountain bike rides. Kids under 16 are invited to fish the village pond as part of Kid’s Fishing Day from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the smallest, largest and tagged fish.
Look for hidden treasure on a guided geocaching hike. Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunt that uses hand-held global positioning systems (GPS) to find an item hidden in such places as trees and under rocks.
“This is an international activity that has really caught on especially with college students and families over the past several years. There are now over 45,000 geocache sites throughout the world,” said Don Pelly, Shaker Village Naturalist. “Geocaching is an exploration activity that has come quite a way since the days of a map and a compass. Now, you plug in GPS coordinates and head off on the hunt.”
National Trails Day at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill runs from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2008. Admission is FREE. National Trails Day does not include Village tour admission.
Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is owned and operated by Shakertown at Pleasant Hill, Kentucky, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational corporation. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a National Historic Landmark from boundary to boundary by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
