We tend to romanticize the Shakers, but they were real people, with real struggles and emotions, just like everyone else. These images will be brought to life using manuscript records and contemporary newspaper articles.

11:00 - 11:30  Meet The Animals – Ralph Ward, Manager, Museum Programs and Agritourism, Meeting Area C. Learn how maintenance of these heritage breeds of livestock is part of Shaker Village’s mission to preserve the legacy of the Shakers.
11:30 - 12:15  “It Was a Strange and Melancholy Sight” – Susan Lyons Hughes, Manager, Museum and Special Programs, Meeting Area C. This is the story of the Pleasant Hill Shakers during the tumultuous years of the Civil War through Shaker journals and photos.

2:30 - 3:30 A New Look at the South Union Furniture Tradition – Tommy Hines, Executive Director, Shaker Museum at South Union, Meeting Area C. The Shaker craftsmen who made furniture at South Union created a tradition of furniture-making that is distinctive among furniture made at other Shaker villages. This presentation will examine the basic forms attributed to the village, including recent finds.
