The Pleasant Hill Singers will perform Music of the Black Shakers, a celebration of the African-American Shaker experience in song and interpretive dance. With special guest performances of shape-note singing by The Appalachian Association of Sacred Harp Singers.
What is Sacred Harp Music?
Sacred Harp shape-note singing is a uniquely American tradition. Sacred harp music is a religious folk music named for Benjamin Franklin White’s The Sacred Harp (1844), that uses a system of printed shapes, instead of standard music notation, to help untrained singers learn how to read music. Old time spirituals are sung a cappella; the “sacred harp” is the human voice.
Sacred Harp music is not Shaker music, but both traditions stem from the same southern root and share similar performance practices. Both types of singing rely solely on the unaccompanied human voice and both were created to simplify music learning.
